about
This song started with a jam in the digital instrument room at Calgary's National Music Centre. Andrew Braun, Derek DiFilippo and I had full access to record what must be one of the greatest synth collections from 1970 to the 1990's, a dreamy situation to be in. Months later, Andrew created the track for this out of mainly samples and takes from that jam. The track was a banger, a undeniable dance party. We met Maiah Manser in LA the following year and crafted the topline very nearly as you hear it now. We all tracked vocals on a magic microphone that ended up making the final cut. If you listen carefully you can hear Maiah's angelic wailing in the outro and Andrew's rock steady vocals on the chorus. I wrote several different bridges in 2019 to complete the song, but ended on the creepy one in this version. I re-tracked the lead vocals this year in my home studio and was lucky to have my friend Ted Gowans mix it from quarantine in LA this past month. It's been a long journey, but when a song sparks something in me like that, I can't let it go until it's finished. "Morning Light" never felt right as a Rococode song, as it was intended, but maybe the world needed to wait for the right time to hear it.
"Morning Light" is haunting, lustful, infatuation with the present moment. What else do we have?
lyrics
Whisper it to me
Show me who you want to be
Let yourself be free
oo oo oo
All the lights
All the lights
Spin me right around
All my life
All my life
Higher now
Higher now
Buzzing up my mind
Touch me now
Touch me now
We dance until we die
To leave it all behind
We’ll never see the morning, the morning, the morning light
Holding onto this feeling
Like it’s something worth stealing
Breaking up past the ceiling
oo oo oo
All the lights
All the lights
Spin me right around
All my life
All my life
Higher now
Higher now
Buzzing up my mind
Touch me now
Touch me now
you and i
come and put your mind on me
twist and turn and dance and see
to the etherial wisteria
show me a vision
a dream beyond the dream beyond the dream beyond the dream
you and i you and i you are me
